1. The design is drawn on the back of the base fabric.

2. The lace is placed on the front of the fabric and is face down to the bed of the sewing machine. You can use flat flower head pins or tape if needed. When using cotton or linen fabrics, you may not need to pin in place - they tend to cling to themselves. Also, because the applique is flat to the sewing sewing machine bed, it should stay in place during this tack down step.
3. Stitch along the design from the back of the base fabric.
<span face=""arial" , sans-serif" style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 106%;">These are tips that may help when you are tatting organic Mignonette Bags. The most important thing to remember: You cannot “tat it wrong”. I find that each bag that I tat is different from the last. Through the years I have changed the way I end and add thread from my shuttle. I may not always do a shoelace to switch shuttles because I was finding that it caused the split ring to twist. Sometimes I forget and do get a twisty split ring – oh well! I used to do a mock picot, but now find that it is not necessary. Get it?!? Just let the thread guide you ; D

In this picture, I have wrapped the bare thread around a piece of masking tape (sticky side in) to help control it. If your goal is front side tatting throughout your bag, you may find it easier to leave this spit ring thread long enough for the entire bag and wind it on a shuttle. Then you will have the option of easily tatting your double stitches in reverse order as needed.

I don't think I could follow a pattern if I had to. They seem to grow on their own and I change the stitch count to make them form the shape that suits me at the time.

I had been asked so often for a pattern, but after I finish one - I have no desire to count the stitches. I guess I could have counted and made notes as I went - duh! But Lori Dunlap came to my rescue and "dissected" one of my finished bags. She counted each round of my ecru bag so that I could type a pattern that could be shared.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lD7US8jkD10&t=12s
I even did a shoelace trick to make the thread from the shuttle and the ball run out at the same time. There is no need to tie on the new thread - it will merely be trapped in the base of the last ring. This pattern is one I call "FleaMkt" I found an example of it tatted with a lightweight yarn at the local Flea market several years ago. I have never found the exact pattern in any books.

So this idea has been "baking" in my brain for several years. There have been several books printed now about tatting over cabone rings, and I had seen several gals tatting over large polished stone ring beads. I wondered if it would work as a pin keep to tat over a rare earth magnet. I bought magnets in several sizes and there they sat on my shelf ; / I finally remembered to pack them to ship to meet me in Montana. Sadly, they didn't show up until a day before I was leaving. But! I had bought new 'Lizbeth size 3 thread from Deb Arnold of DS9 Designs
https://www.facebook.com/pages/DS9Designs-Tatting-Supplies-and-More/156325917726077
http://www.ds9designs.com
I got the project started in Montana and finished it on the plane to come home. I did a simple 3 picot chain joining it around the magnet. Well...I had thought that I would need a metal washer of some sort to hold it to my jacket, but happened to have a PURPLE paperclip that Wendy Griffin, who needle tats, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrEVwuTy_Cc gave me. The paperclip held the magnet - and scissors - and my needle, just fine!

Matthew Takeda came up with this novel way of making a single shuttle split ring. The technique is shared with his permission on Bina Madden's Paradise Treasures site: http://www.paradisetreasures.com/pdf/takedasssr.pdf

What may not be clear in the diagram, is how to close the ring. (at least I was missing it...) I have uploaded a video to YouTube to explain this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXvNRaaxV14

The FREE! pattern for my floral headband using this technique can be found on my website:
I had read that this was the technique that was used for the appliqued lace of Kate Middleton's wedding dress. This reminded me that I had made a sample of the technique on the sewing machine many years ago.
The ground is two layers of fine poly netting turned cross grain to each other. This was a happy accident. Back in the days when I had a monogram shop, I was working away and was distracted by a piece of netting that I had haphazardly thrown in a chair. I glanced across the room and saw this sweet floral netting. I didn't remember buying it. Well, I didn't buy floral netting - but discovered that by laying two pieces of plain netting cross grain (in 90 degree angles to itself) it was no longer a boring square ground but a tiny floral pattern.
Set up for this method: The design is drawn on WSS with water erasable pen. This is placed on top of the netting ground. Another layer of WSS is underneath and all are hooped together. The design is straight stitched free motion. The cutwork is satin stitched. While the design is still in the hoop, place it on the item to be appliqued with the motif. Straight stitch around the edge to secure the motif. Trim away the excess netting from the top and the background fabric from underneath the motif. The applique edge is stitched over gimp cord, forming picots of the cording. A final satin stitch will smooth the edge.gina Butlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01705189785680292975noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-247487111209279922.post-31621180601344526162012-08-19T11:43:00.000-05:002013-04-18T10:06:28.453-05:00Thumb Drive Fob

We all collect thumb drives. How do you keep track of their content?

I have a friend who puts different colors of ribbon on hers and keeps a notebook with their contents.

I'm fond of little "do dads". Something quick and easy to jar my memory of their content. Some are decorative paper clips - I have found a heart (lesson plans), a foot (delivery scheme maps), and even a guitar (music). I have a tiny
FSL angel on my thumb drive that fits my embroidery machine.
Can you guess what is on this latest thumb drive with a tatted heart?

**Addendum** I was asked to teach this little heart at Camp Wanna Tat this spring. I have searched for months for the source of the original heart. I wasn't even sure if I had personally tatted it - but it was in my stash of tatted doo-dads. Well... I wasn't asking the right people. When I showed my lesson sheet to my genius tatting friend, Irene Morgan, and asked if she recognized the pattern - she took a minute - and recalled that Pam Freck was tatting this little heart and called it the "hasty heart". Now! that I had a pattern name I could do a google search and came up with the original owner! drumroll.... Barbara Hevener! and here is a link for her original pattern.

I used Patti Duff's beaded lanyard pattern to make a lanyard to hold eyeglasses. My beads were not uniform in size. Irene Morgan suggested that I string them by twos (that were similar in size and color). YES! that worked out nicely. I used a bracelet closure rather then using the eyeglass findings that I had first intended. You know the ones that are like a double eyelet of vinyl rings? They hold the earpieces of the glasses around your neck.
I decided that I wanted this to have more of a necklace appearance. The lanyard will still slip over the head, but the eyeglasses earpiece will slip down through the loop of the leaf.

The video also shows how to use Best Press to block a tatted piece.

gina Butlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01705189785680292975noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-247487111209279922.post-34558495473455439412011-06-25T01:20:00.003-05:002017-05-19T21:38:46.098-05:00Finished headbands
I use the nylon headbands that are covered in fabric or braid. Sometimes I can find them 5 for a $1!
The pattern repeat for the rolling rings headband:

R 4 - 4 - 8 cl & RW

C 12, LJ into 2nd picot of ring

This is a simplified version of my original pattern:

This shows how to open the knot on the loading loop to release the thread. You can thread a blunt (tapestry) needle with the thread end and weave back and forth through the caps of a previous element. You can also tat over a plastic flosser (or magic thread)in the next element and then pull the old thread end through to hide it. The third video shows tatting over the ending and the added thread ends.
gina Butlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01705189785680292975noreply@blogger.com0
